I'm probably the last to write about this, but British band Radiohead are offering their latest album for a price that you determine via download. The price box is empty and you fill it in yourself, anywhere from zero to infinity. So technically, you could legally acquire it for free (save the 45 pence credit card surcharge, roughly 90 cents). After a couple of difficult years for the "music industry" that has seen a an increase in illegally downloaded material and a decline in CD sales, Radiohead are making an attempt to send a message it seems.
Afraid of people stealing your art? Alleviate yourself by giving it away for free.
Tired of record companies taking your art and selling at a price that you have no control over? Easy... Cut out the middle man and do with your creation as you see fit.
Assuming everyone who reads this blog is a raging fan, let me get personal...
How much did you pay?

i didn't buy it, but it is a really interesting concept...I'll defintely check it out now...and if I buy it I'll let you know how much I paid...
7 euro.
that's fairly ethical, right?
haven't listened to the whole thing yet.. just a song or two last night, when my confirmation email came in at 3am.
hope you're doing good, joel. check out my blog and i'll frequent yours. yeah!
Am I the one who told you about it? I definitely remember commenting and spreading the word. Maybe I just told Mike... Either way, I also read that Oasis and Jamiroquai may follow suit.
Oh, and Trent Reznor was raving about how he is no longer under a record contract and just going indie so he may do the same. Let's face it, he probably has his own studio and distributing the music digitally will not really cost him anything...well, at least not anything that will be much of a nuisance to his wallet.
And as for your question: I've paid nothing because I haven't downloaded the album. I'm not really planning to since I'm not really a Radiohead fan, as you well know. However, for the sake of argument, I'd like to say that I'd pay somewhere around $10 for it but in reality I don't believe in paying for music at all. I know this has been done in many ways for many years but, should art really have a price? I think not.
I paid nothing for it. I'm not a big Radiohead fan, so I downloaded just to check it out. If I end up liking it I'll purchase it when they release next year.
True, true. But I never buy it.
So I now got into Radiohead and Kid A is a really great album. Hahaha.
five pounds.
