A few things in the news today:
- Elderly man freezes to death: An absolute shame. A WWII vet from Michigan died alone in his home because his power was shut off. From the article, it wasn't clear "if anyone had made personal contact with (the man) to explain" what actions were being taken after his bills were left unpaid.
We're turning into machines. Cold, insensitive, robots. This is one example, but it happens all over the world in greater numbers than we'd like to think about.
- Senate extend HDTV deadline: Conversely, endless updates for months have plagued the airwaves, warning people that if they didn't prepare themselves, they'd lose their TV signal. The government has even provided coupons to help people with their TVs. And now, millions of dollars will be spent to extend a deadline that we have known about for years.
A man is left to die in the cold, but we let the Senate worry about our TVs? Is there an issue with priorities? Enough already!

i never put the two together, but you make perfect sense with your correlations. I was disgusted when I found out that this man probably had no notice that his power was being turned down. There is no excuse for this and whoever was in charge of his "case" should be fired at least. I'd even go for manslaughter or something. (Maybe that's too harsh).
And you're right on with MORE of an extension of this digital tv issue. We're in a recession, they've planned to do this. Why on EARTH would they spend more money to delay something we've been warned about for such a long time? Because people can't "Get it together?" Get it together or don't. But it's your responsibility. People need to learn to live with the consequences of their actions and their passivity.

I think our country has been on this path for a long time. The culmination being the bailout of banks instead of auto industries. We may never see if the bailout even worked with banks to begin with, and they used the money pretty much for bonuses to their employees. But they really deserved this year to be the 6th most lucrative year in the history of Wall St. though, it's not like they drove their companies into the ground. I'm not for any type of bail out that isn't for the people but at least with the auto industries you get a tangible product that people can use. Since it was all about paying banks to pay off their debt and fictional accounts of money, why not just give all of the money to the people to use to pay off their debt and therefore refunding the bank system and having a debt free nation?
The fact that GOP congratulates themselves on voting a shut-out for the stimulus bill during a retreat, even though they lost; and badly, at that. It sucks even more because Obama bent over backwards to please them by taking out about 60% of the amount originally alloted to infrastructure- which we need to build a sound foundation for years to come- to put it towards tax cuts for businesses as an effort to appease the GOP. I agree with a lot of the members of the House who say that if they're just going to slap away the attempt at bipartisanship, then all of the infrastructure should be put back in and the tax cuts taken out since the GOP isn't needed to have it pass.
Our country stopped caring for the people along time ago. Or any people for that matter; at least those who aren't positioned to make millions of dollars while everyone else suffers. The only difference between the rift of an old man dying from lack of power and the politics of the last 8 years fucking us over is the amount of publicity given to each happening.
